I-66 Pavement Rehab Begins April 4

From VDOT:

In April, the Virginia Department of Transportation begins a $48 million project to repair and resurface six and a half miles of badly deteriorated pavement on Interstate 66 between the Capital Beltway and Route 50 in Fairfax County. To minimize impacts to motorists, all lane closures will take place at night—between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday nights. The project will be complete in the fall of 2012.

Beginning April 4, two of three lanes on eastbound I-66 will be closed weeknights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. between the Beltway and Route 50.

Beginning Monday, April 18, the same closures will begin 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. weeknights on westbound I-66 between the Beltway and Route 50. Crews will limit the work zones to about two miles at a time. The closures in both directions will continue Sunday through Thursday nights through November 2012, weather permitting.

Daytime closures of the Telegraph Road northbound and southbound ramps to the Capital Beltway Outer Loop (I-95/495 North) will continue through the end of April. Closures will occur daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and occasionally on weekends from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Motorists traveling north on Telegraph Road should make a right on eastbound Huntington Avenue to northbound Route 1 to the Capital Beltway Outer Loop.  Motorists traveling south on Telegraph Road should take the ramp over Telegraph Road onto Huntington Avenue to northbound Route 1 to the Capital Beltway Outer Loop.

I-66 HOV Ramps Opening to All Traffic during Off-Peak Hours Beginning Feb. 28

From Fairfax County:

At long last, the HOV ramps on I-66 at Monument Drive and Stringfellow Road will open to all traffic during off-peak hours and on weekends beginning at 10am Monday, February 28. While opening the ramps will not solve all the traffic problems on I-66, it will immediately ease congestion along that route as well as US-50, the Fairfax County Parkway, and Route 28.

Opening these ramps during off-peak hours will also give motorists another way to avoid the construction happening as VDOT adds a new interchange where the Fairfax County Parkway and the Fair Lakes Parkway intersect.

10 Tips for Getting the Most Bang for Your Buck at the Gas Pump

10 Tips for Getting the Most Bang for Your Buck at the Gas Pump

From CherMurphyPR:

The average national gas price is $3.13 per gallon, representing a $.48 per gallon increase from a year ago. And many analysts are predicting that prices will continue to climb throughout 2011. Rather than digging deeper into the wallet to pay more, many people are looking (and finding) ways to save money at the gas pump.

“Most of the time, we drive around without much thought about economizing on fuel,” says Barbara Terry (www.barbaraterry.com and www.howathletesroll.com). “But there are many things we can do to save gas. Especially during tough economic times and when gas prices are up, we should be making an effort to keep those costs lower.”
