There's No Such Thing as a Free...Game?

There's No Such Thing as a Free...Game?

There may be no such thing as a free game of pickup soccer in Fairfax County after a new permit policy is put in place.  Previously, permits were only required for groups of 20 or more players. The new policy, which was approved earlier this week, requires groups of 20 or more to submit a $5.50 fee for each participant, including spectators.

Local soccer players like Danny Arnez and Greg Pedersen, who play at noon daily at Pentagon City’s Virginia Highlands Park did not know about the change and were not pleased after learning about it.

Hit the Trail

Hit the Trail

What would you expect a four-and-three-quarter-year-old to say at the end of a four-and-a-half-mile hike that she just finished using her own two feet? “What a wonderful day,” Sofi announced when we walked past the old Tavern (that I was wishing was still a tavern) at Great Falls National Park.

FX CO park board weighs rules to limit 'walk-ons' on county fields
New rules under consideration by the Fairfax County Park Authority Board would severely curtail the use of parks for casual, pick-up games of soccer and other sports.

Under current policy, if a field is not in use by a group that reserved it in advance, a “walk-on” group, with up to 40 participants (including spectators), can use it. The proposed rule would cut that number in half.

All county parks would be affected, including Mason District Park, Annandale Community Park, and Roundtree Park in the Annandale area.

There are Yoga Classes for Everyone

There are Yoga Classes for Everyone

I have been hesitating to start taking yoga because I am not flexible and all the people I know that take yoga are flexible. Is there a yoga class for me?

Absolutely. The people you know that are taking yoga are flexible BECAUSE they are practicing yoga. They are not necessarily practicing yoga because they are flexible!

Most of the yoga classes offered at studios and fitness centers teach the physical practice of yoga (asana) which is designed to increase flexibility, strength, and balance.

In classes you will be taught how to get into and out of poses safely, lengthen and strengthen muscles and to move in new and different ways than you are accustomed to moving.  New patterns of movement bring on increased flexibility and strength.
