Fairfax County Public Schools Will Be Closed Today; Offices Remain Open

From FCPS Outreach:

All Fairfax County public schools will be closed today, January 18, 2011. Offices are open with an unscheduled leave policy in effect. 
 
The following activities in schools and on school grounds are canceled:
·   extracurricular activities
·   interscholastic contests
·   team practices
·   field trips
·   middle school after-school programs 
·   professional learning and training courses
·   all adult and community education classes
·   recreation programs and community use 

School Age Child Care (SACC) centers are closed.  

Emergency personnel are to report to work.

Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office Announces College Scholarship Opportunity

Are you currently or will you be enrolled in a Virginia college or university? Are you pursuing a degree in the field of criminal justice? If you answered “yes” to both of these questions, then you are eligible to apply for a college scholarship from the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute (VSI) Scholarship Program. Scholarships are available to both full- and part-time students.

As part of the application process, Fairfax County Sheriff Stan Barry must submit a letter of recommendation on behalf of the applicant. To obtain a letter of recommendation, please contact Lieutenant Sonny Cachuela at shf-pio@fairfaxcounty.gov or call 703-246-3251.

FCPS Career and Transition Services to Hold Open House January 19

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Career and Transition Services will hold an open house on Wednesday, January 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Woodson High School.  This event will showcase services that students with disabilities can access in high school as they prepare to transition from school to adult life. 

Designed for middle and high school-aged students and their parents, the sessions will provide information that families can use to help their sons and daughters. FCPS staff members who are interested in learning about transition services are also welcome to attend.

Career and Transition Services staff members will be available to share information and answer individual questions regarding the following services:

FCPS and Fairfax Chamber to Launch New Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools

The new Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools will be launched at a news conference on Tuesday, January 4, at 8 a.m. at the Gatehouse Administration Center.

            A partnership of the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the foundation will be a flexible vehicle for the community to invest in its future through education.  The foundation will be able to support initiatives that help students acquire 21st century skills, advance the diverse needs of the community, and contribute to the creation of a world-class workforce.
