Springfield Couple Calls Asia a Second Home and Continues to Teach Nursing Abroad

A Super NoVA is a person with a unique talent or business that makes them stand out in the crowd of Northern Virginia. Clint and Vickie Lambert make this week’s Super NoVA spot for their commitment to teaching abroad. The Lamberts have lived at Greenspring retirement community since May 2008, but have spent a good portion of that time teaching nursing in Asia.

Dr. Clint, who is retired military (10 years Navy, 4 years Air Force, 6 years Army), is a psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist and former President of Lambert Counseling Services in Georgia. Dr. Vickie Lambert is a nurse educator and a former Dean and Professor Emerita of the Georgia Health Sciences University, College of Nursing.

The Lamberts retired in 2000 and decided they wanted to travel the world. When a colleague found out about a teaching opportunity in Japan, they packed up their suitcases and moved to Ube, Japan for 2 years to teach undergraduate nursing students at Yamaguchi University Faculty of Medicine.

“We made it clear that we were interested in their culture. We weren’t interested in going where the tourists go. We were one of them,” said Vickie.

The Lamberts attribute this mentally for many of their unique experiences abroad. When they moved back to the states in 2003, they knew they were not done with their travels and teaching in Asia. Their next move was to Wuhan, China where they spent three-month increments teaching masters and doctoral nursing students at Wuhan University for 5 years. After China the Lambert’s spent three months teaching students at the Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai, Thailand. Their next trip to Thailand is scheduled for mid-July.

“We leave in 29 days,” said Clint, who appears to have a countdown going and is looking forward to their returning to Thailand. Asia has become a sort of second home to the Lamberts.

“As American professors in Asia we have always been very well respected,” said Vickie.
