Man arrested for DUI after hitting pedestrian in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- A woman was struck and killed while waiting on the bus in Springfield after police say a drunk driver lost control and hit her Saturday.

The victim has been identified as Senait Mamo, 47, of Springfield, Va. Police say she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Corey English, 22, of Fredericksburg, Va. was charged with with driving while intoxicated, police said.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- A pedestrian was struck and killed near a bus stop in Springfield Saturday evening, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The accident happened on Old Keene Mill near Greeley Boulevard around 2:50 p.m. Police say a car struck a woman and veered toward another lane, striking an additional car.

The pedestrian died as a result of her injuries and police have not released her name at this time.

The crash involved two cars and police say several people were injured.

Kegs taken from West Springfield Ledo Pizza

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- Several kegs were taken from a Ledo Pizza location in West Springfield over the course of a few weeks in June.

Springfield house fire caused by unattended candle

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- A Springfield house fire over the weekend was caused by an unattended candle, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said.

The fire happened at the home located at 5831 Heming Avenue Saturday night, officials said.

Firefighters quickly knocked the fire out that was coming from the two-story home. Nobody was inside the house when the fire started. The residents called officials when they got home and heard the smoke alarm.

Nobody was displaced and nobody was injured.

Damages are estimated at $18,750. The fire was accidental and was caused by an unattended candle that was too close to combustibles in a bedroom, investigators said.

Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) is bringing together an all-star instructor ensemble from around the U.S. to provide a Music Theatre Workshop tailored to provide real-world experience by teaching students the integration of drama, voice, movement and choreographed dance from July 13 to July 24 for ages 8 years-old to 18 years-old for $900 and a junior class from July 20 to 24 for ages 6 years to 7 years old for $500. Rabid 'suspect' raccoon caught in Fairfax County

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (WUSA9) -- Animal Control captured a suspect raccoon that could be responsible for biting a woman Wednesday morning in a Springfield park, police said.

Animal Control responded to the report of a raccoon that was "walking in a wobbly manner" close to a walking path at Monarch Oak Lane and Oak Hollow lane, close to a creek, according to Fairfax County police.
