This Earth Day, Focus on Heavy Metals in the Environment

As the world celebrates Earth Day, environmental problems will be widely discussed. What many people are just beginning to realize is that some of these issues, like the increasing amounts of heavy metals such as mercury and lead in our environment, can have a direct and negative impact on human health.

“We are poisoning our air, food, and water with toxins that are impacting our health,” says Dr. Gary Kaplan, founder of The Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine (www.kaplanclinic.com).  “Increasingly we see patients who are suffering serious health issues as a consequence of toxins we have released into our environment.  It is essential to educate yourself about these dangers, so you can more readily identify and avoid risks and address problems when they do occur.”

Here are a few of the environmental toxins that people need to be aware of, because of the risk they pose to human health:

Tips for Eating Healthfully From a Vending Machine

Tips for Eating Healthfully From a Vending Machine

We live in a fast-paced world and, at one time or another, we have all found ourselves face to face with a vending machine, looking for a snack or beverage. The problem, up until now, has been that vending machine food was always synonymous with junk food or unhealthy options. But a new company has set out to change the way people see vending machines, and the nutrition that they get from them.

“Maybe it wasn’t easy to find healthy, tasty food from vending machines before, but we have made it our mission to change that,” explains Jolly Backer, the chief executive officer of Fresh Healthy Vending (www.freshvending.com). “Now, people can get a nutritious snack or beverage, whether they are playing, working, or at school. We are on the move and hopefully coming to an area near you soon.”

5 Things Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You About CPR

5 Things Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You About CPR

CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation used to be very simple to understand. Cardio stands for heart, pulmonary stands for lungs and resuscitation means to revive from death. When a patient died, someone would push on the person’s chest to try to restart the heart while giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to help the person breathe. Over time, CPR has become more complex as healthcare professionals have discovered advanced ways to try to bring the person back to life. The patient may now be given medications, his heart may be electrically shocked with paddles placed on the chest, and he may be placed on a ventilator to help him breathe. What seemed like an easy question, “Does the person want CPR?” has turned into a more complicated decision.

What do you need to know to make a good decision?

1.  Make sure you really understand what really happens during CPR.

Cutting Calories Just Got Easier with Fresh Healthy Vending

Cutting Calories Just Got Easier with Fresh Healthy Vending

When it comes to maintaining a healthy weight, calories in versus calories burned is everything! Losing simply comes down to using more calories than you take in. But did you realize that taking in just 50 calories less per day can lead to an effortless five-pound weight loss per year? It’s true! A pound is equal to 3,500 calories, so if you use 50 calories less per day than you take in, you will drop a pound approximately every two months. And cutting calories on the go just got a lot easier!

“A lot of people are looking for ways to cut calories and get healthy, and now we have an option that will support them in doing so,” explains Jolly Backer, the chief executive officer of Fresh Healthy Vending (www.freshvending.com). “Our machines offer the healthy snack and drink options that people want but have had a difficult time finding on the go, up until now.”

Permanent Birth Control

Most families come to a point in their lives when they feel they are done having children and need to not only consider the types of birth control methods available but also how they fit within their lifestyle. Certain permanent solutions, such as vasectomies may not offer the most reliable form of contraception. Tubal ligations have unacceptable failure rates and potential for side effects related to surgery.
