A majority of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) families and employees support opening schools one week before Labor Day, beginning with the 2012-13 school year, as indicated in a recent FCPS survey.

“There are several reasons to open schools before Labor Day, the most important of which is to provide additional instructional time for teachers and students before Standards of Learning (SOL) testing takes place,” said FCPS Superintendent Jack D. Dale.  “Our parents and employees are solidly behind making this change.  It’s time for the state to address the wishes of our community to start school earlier.

Office for Children Can Help Families Plan for Child Care on Snow Days

Office for Children Can Help Families Plan for Child Care on Snow Days

From Fairfax County Department of Family Services:

According to the Farmers' Almanac, our area will have an average winter this year. Although area schools often shut down when it snows, most businesses stay open. This means parents often face a child care dilemma on snow days when they have to work but elementary schools are closed. The Fairfax County Office for Children can help families find care for their children this winter.

"The key is to plan ahead and arrange for care now, before it snows," says the Office for Children’s Acting Director Anne-Marie Twohie. She explains that parents can find child care professionals near their home or office on the Office for Children’s Web site.
