Community Invited to Celebrate National 'Make a Difference Day'

Fairfax County, VA – Registration opens on September 20 for this year’s VolunteerFest®, to be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Over 1,500 volunteers are needed at area nonprofits, schools and parks to complete 31 projects on this county-wide day of service, held in conjunction with national “Make a Difference Day.” Individuals, families, corporations and civic groups are encouraged to participate.

The 16th annual VolunteerFest® encompasses a variety of volunteer projects, including assembling care packages for troops, entertaining seniors, creating wildlife habitats, painting houses and beautifying libraries inside and out across Fairfax County.

“In this time of economic distress, we should realize that service is a solution to some our toughest challenges and volunteers are needed now more than ever,” says Jeanne Sanders, executive director of Volunteer Fairfax. 

Volunteer Fire Department Fire Prevention Week Open House

Join the Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department in support of this years Fire Prevention Week activities at our Open House on October 9th form 8am until 2pm at our station located at 7011 Backlick Rd, Springfield, Va 22150.

Learn how important Smoke Alarms are in additon to other activities to help educate the community in being fire smart & safe.

The day starts with a Pancake Breakfast from 8am until 11am with ongoing fire safety activities, moon bounce, tours and hands-on with fire & rescue equipment.

Remember - Be Fire Safe - Install Smoke Alarms - Check them Monthly and repalce batteries regularly - NEVER disable a smoke detector or remove its batteries.

Fairfax Genealogical Society 7th Annual Fall Fair

Saturday, October 30, marks the 7th Annual Fairfaix Genealogical Society Fall Fair. Be sure to register before October 21st! Registration to fair includes lunch, entrance to all four lectures, and access to the vendor hall.


The Workhouse Arts Center Presents Art, Wine & All That Jazz Festival

The Workhouse Arts Center will present its 2nd annual Art, Wine & All That Jazz festival on October 2!  The festival follows in the footsteps of many historic performances at the Workhouse.  During the 1950s and 1960s, the famous Lorton Prison was the setting for regular concerts by musical stars such as Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.  This year, the Workhouse will welcome back “The Deanna Bogart Band” along with a range of new and exciting talent!

BizFair 2010 is Next Week

BizFair 2010 is a joint venture of the Greater Sprinfield Chamber of Commerce and Springfield Civic Association that will be held on November 16. It will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Springfield Mall. At BizFair 2010 residents from across southeast Fairfax County will meet local business to consumer companies in time to SHOP LOCAL for the holidays. BizFair is the ideal time to make your list, and check it twice, in planning for the holidays.

Macy's Shop for a Cause Returns

Macy's will support Civil Air Patrol (CAP) through "Shop for a Cause" once again this year. The event will be held at Springfield Mall in Springfield, VA on Saturday, October 16. Last year, Civil Patrol's National Capital Wing, a nonprofit organization serving the D.C. metro area raised over $1,500 through this event. The organization hopes to meet and surpass these numbers at this year's Shop for a Cause.

 

Gallery After Hours: Art Out Loud...a fusion of art and music

The following event was sent to us from Workhouse Arts Center:

Escape to the Workhouse on September 18 for a night of live music and art! Art Out Loud...a fusion of art and music will feature the drawings of Mary Gallagher Stout and the eclectic alternative rock of "Big Green Cherry".  Mary will present many of her pieces, explaining the meaning and inspiration behind them. She will also sign copies of her new book: REAL Life Drawings: My Eye on Washington D.C., published in August 2010 by Sunbury Press.
