FREE Scary Face Pancakes This Friday at IHOP

No Tricks – Just Treats As Kids 12 And Under Celebrate Halloween A Little Early

IHOP restaurants in the DC area will celebrate Halloween a little early this year, offering kids 12 and under a free Scary Face Pancake as part of a national No Tricks – Just Treats program designed to provide kids with a safe and fun Halloween event.  The “design-your-own” Scary Face Pancake includes an oversized signature buttermilk pancake with a whipped topping mouth and strawberry nose, served with two mini OREO® cookies and candy corn on the side to allow kids to create their own Halloween hotcake. 

IHOP wants to provide trick or treaters with a safe and fun Halloween celebration that they can enjoy with friends and family as part of the company’s ongoing effort to give something back to the communities in which it operates.

Volunteer Fairfax Present: VolRUNteer 5k & Fun Run

Fairfax, Va -- In an effort to encourage volunteerism and a healthy lifestyle, Volunteer Fairfax is hosting it’s first-ever volRUNteer 5k and Fun Run, November 14th 2010. The volRUNteer 5k and Fun Run’s aim is to promote volunteerism, along with offering families the opportunity to get fit by being part of the 5k or fun run. All participants will have the chance to give back, by participating in on site service projects race day. The race commences at 8:00 a.m. November 14th, 2010 at George Mason University.

New to the Workhouse Arts Center: The Sumi-e Society Exhibition

The Sumi - e Society Exhibition opened on October 13, and will continue through November 20. The Workhouse is proud to host the Sumi - e Society Exhibition, The Society's mission is to foster and encourage an appreciation of East Asian brush painting techniques through publications, workshops, lectures and exhibitions; to serve as a cultural bridge between East and West; and to furnish information to all persons who wish to learn about this art. The exhibition is open to all artists, and aims to publicly show the best current East Asian brush paintings and calligraphy.

Firefighters Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The following was sent to us by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department:

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department personnel will don pink shirts between October 26 - 29, 2010, to heighten awareness of breast cancer.  Firefighters and staff will wear the t-shirts as they respond to emergency and non-emergency calls throughout the four-day period. 

This October is the 26th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with many other organizations joining the fight to eradicate this disease.  For example, at their 50th annual convention, the International Association of Firefighters approved a resolution to encourage participation in campaigns honoring women fighting cancer.  Additionally, the National Football League has added a pink ribbon to its logo this month, and players are wearing pink cleats, wristbands, gloves, chin straps, and other items showing their support of Breast Cancer Month.

Dr. Steven Chu Plans to Attend 'Moving America Forward' House Party

Washington, D.C. – Organizing for America supporters will join together at “Moving America Forward” house parties across the country to watch President Obama’s webcast Town Hall at George Washington University and get organized for the midterm election.  The Honorable Steven Chu will attend a “Moving America Forward” house party in Springfield, VA where he will speak to supporters about the stakes this election season and get them engaged for the midterm election.

With less than a month to the Election Day, the President will use the Town Hall to answer questions from voters and lay out the choice the country faces this November: whether to support Democratic leaders and continue to make progress for American families and small businesses—or to return to the failed, Bush-era policies that nearly drove the nation into a second Great Depression.

Now at Panera: Pink Ribbon Bagel to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Panera Bread's signature Pink Ribbon Bagel is back for the month of October to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Panera Bread has Northern Virginia locations in Arlington, Falls Church, Bailey's Crossroads, Alexandria, Merrifield, McLean, Virginia, West Springfield, Fairfax and Reston participating for the 10th year in a row to help support the fight against breast cancer.

The bagels will be sold throughout the month of October and the participating bakery-cafes will donate a portion of the proceeds from each Pink Ribbon Bagel to the Inova Health Systems Life with Cancer Program. Not only will the bagel support breast cancer awareness, it is also delicious! The bagel includes cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, vanilla, honey and brown sugar.
