At the November 16, 2010 meeting, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors proclaimed December 1, 2010 as AIDS Awareness Day to coincide with World AIDS Day.

Pancake Breakfast with Santa and Toys for Tots Drive

The Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a Pankcake Breakfast with Santa on Saturday December 11 from 8:00 am to 11:00 am at our Firehouse (7011 Backlick Road, Springfield Va, 22150).

Their will be games and activities for children and families. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for childern 6 and under. We will also be collecting new & unwrapped toys for this years "Toys for Tots" toy drive.   Help bring a smile to a child this year and bring a new, unwrapped toy to our "Pancakes with Santa" breakfast.

Rep. Connolly’s Workshop for Federal Employees/Retirees Set for Dec 4

FAIRFAX – Congressman Gerry Connolly will hold his annual Open Season Workshop on December 4 to help federal employees and retirees navigate through the improvement and changes in the 2011 Federal Employees Health Benefits Plans, dental and vision insurance programs, and flexible spending accounts.

Connolly’s Open Season Workshop for Federal Employees and Retirees will take place at the Fairfax County Government Center on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 10 am.  The address is 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA.   The program will run from 10 am to 11 am in the Board Auditorium.  Participants will have the opportunity to meet individually with FEHB plan representatives and other experts and view exhibits in the adjacent conference rooms until 2 pm.

Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce to Hold Networking Mixer

The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is planning on holding a Networking Mixer tomorrow evening, Thursday, November 18 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express. The hotel is located at 6401 Brandon Avenue in Springfield, VA.

Join Chamber members and guests for this after-hours networking opportunity. The Networking Mixers are free for all employees of Chamber member companies as well as first and second time visitors; $15 after the second visit.

Fair Oaks Mall Ice Palace Kicks Off the Holiday Season

Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the Grand Court in Fairfax will transform into a winter wonderland with the debut of the Ice Palace. Brimming with the magic of winter and the essence of holiday snow globes, the soaring 30-foot Ice Palace appears to be literally carved from ice. The exhibit features highlights from this holiday season’s highly anticipated movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader from Twentieth Century Fox and Walden Media. To celebrate, the stars from the film will host a lighting ceremony in Los Angeles that will be streamed live to 15 shopping centers across the country.

Distracted Driving Awareness & Summonses on the Rise

From the Fairfax County Police Department:

            In an effort to increase public awareness on the dangers of distracted driving, police launched an intensive enforcement and education effort September 10; and they’re getting results.

            There was a 66 percent increase in citations written for failure to pay full time and attention (and texting while driving) in 2010 compared to the same time period in 2008. Police have issued 7,165 summonses for these offenses this year compared to 4,305 in 2008.
