CAKEBREAD WINE DINNER at CARMELLO’s – FEB. 12

Carmello’s of Old Town Manassas, Va. is kicking off Valentine’s Day early with a four-course Cakebread Winery Wine dinner, featuring wines like Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Pinot Noir 2013, Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, and Merlot 2011 on Thurs., Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. for $110 inclusive per person. The Cakebread wine dinner menu includes: Sauvignon Blanc 2013 served with pan-seared jumbo sea scallops, red quinoa, Maitake mushrooms and pomegranate gastrique; lamb meatballs with homemade fettuccine, feta, sundried tomatoes, mint and pistachio, pesto Alfredo with Pinot Noir 2013; Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 served with Lombo De Vaca À Porto, which is a grilled four-ounce filet mignon, with espresso and port wine sauce, fingerling potatoes and asparagus; and finally, for dessert, a ruby-port poached pear, ruby port-sauce, candied walnuts, crème fraiche, and mint served with Merlot 2011.

Greenspring’s 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off Champions Crowned

Guest judges sampled more than one dozen chili recipes during the ‘heated’ competition

(Springfield, Va.) - While the snow fell around the D.C. region on January 21, more than 150 Greenspring residents and staff warmed up inside at the community’s 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off.   This year, over one dozen recipes were submitted from staff members and residents including Greenspring’s reigning Chili Cook-Off champions.

Each chili was sampled and rated by a panel of five judges including ABC7/WJLA-TV news co-anchors Autria Godfrey and Jummy Olabanji, Greenspring’s dining committee resident chairman Hank Spille, Greenspring’s Director of Finance Berwick Drews, and Greenspring’s Associate Executive Director Pam Haman.  During the event, the room of chili enthusiasts was entertained by KingStreet Bluegrass, a local Alexandria based-band, as well as Greenspring’s own resident square-dancing club.

Maureen Loftus, executive director of LearningRx of Vienna, Va., and Reston, Va. is leading the kick-off of the Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce (TRCC) job shadow program for 11th and 12th grade students of Oakton, Madison and Marshall high schools in Fairfax County, Va., where students will shadow professionals in various industries in January and February. The program received a Blue Ribbon Award from Fairfax County Schools in 2014. Loftus is heading up the program as she is the chair of the TRCC’s Youth and Education Committee. Over $300,000 Donated to Staff Appreciation Fund at Greenspring

 

(Springfield, Va.) - This year, residents at Greenspring donated a total of $302,014 to the community’s Staff Appreciation Fund.  The annual campaign is organized each year as a way for the residents to say “thank you” to the non-management hourly employees at the community.

At Greenspring, eligible employees may include the community’s wait staff, security officers, communication and administrative staff, banquet servers, maintenance workers, culinary team members, housekeepers, and special projects team members, totaling 953 staff members.

On Tuesday, December 9, Greenspring hosted a Staff Appreciation Fund reception where donated funds were distributed to each eligible employee.  Employees also had the opportunity to visit with residents and write notes of thanks for the generosity shown.
