Past-presidents Todd Lattimer and Eric Williams presented the 2010 Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards December 9 at the Hilton Springfield.  Local businesses and citizens are honored each year for their efforts and achievements throughout the year based on nominations from the Greater Springfield community.

The Robert J McDonough Business Owner of the Year award was presented to Mark and Helen Russell, owners of Metro Run & Walk, for excelling in the promotion of their business and for their contributions to the Greater Springfield community.  Metro Run & Walk specializes in shoes, apparel and accessories for runners, walkers, people with an active lifestyle, and those in the quest for daily comfort.

Firefighters Gather, Distribute Toys to Local Children

From Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department:

Partnering with private corporations and local businesses, Fairfax County firefighters and paramedics are sponsoring the Thirteenth Annual Firefighters Holiday Rescuers Toy Drive, and will distribute toys Wednesday, December 15, 2010, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Penn Daw Fire and Rescue Station 11, 6624 Hulvey Terrace, Alexandria, Virginia.

Springfield Chamber of Commerce Members Host Winter Outerwear & Food Drive

From the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce:

Springfield, Virginia –The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce has called on its members to serve as host locations for a Winter Outerwear and Food Drive.  This year the Drive will benefit Ecumenical Community Helping Others (ECHO) and United Community Ministries (UCM).

The Greater Springfield Chamber has hosted this winter campaign since 2001.

For the purposes of this drive, the collection locations will be accepting winter outerwear including new winter hats, scarves and gloves for all ages, new children’s coats, and blankets which can be gently used.  This year, there’s a special need for coats, especially in children's sizes 6 through 16 and adult plus sizes.  Donations of food items must be non-perishable.

Pancake Breakfast with Santa and Toys for Tots Drive

The Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a Pankcake Breakfast with Santa on Saturday December 11 from 8:00 am to 11:00 am at our Firehouse (7011 Backlick Road, Springfield Va, 22150).

Their will be games and activities for children and families. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for childern 6 and under. We will also be collecting new & unwrapped toys for this years "Toys for Tots" toy drive.   Help bring a smile to a child this year and bring a new, unwrapped toy to our "Pancakes with Santa" breakfast.

Briar Patch Donates Rooms for Veteran's Day

Reprinted with permission from Ashburn Patch -- Briar Patch Bed & Breakfast Inn in scenic Middleburg plans to offer free rooms to veterans as part of a nationwide promotion this week to honor those who have served our country.

B&Bs and inns across the country are providing free rooms on Wednesday, Nov. 10, in observance of Veterans Day on Nov. 11 to honor servicemen and women now serving or who have previously served time with one of the country's military forces.

Two B&B owners started the program in 2009. Both were members of the West Virginia B&B Association and this year the veteran program has expanded to include 49 states, 8 international locations and more than 850 Inns.
